and some pianos that want to save the world

Mauro ffortissimo, an artist and musician, drags an old grand piano onto the bluffs near his home on the San Mateo coast. He plays it every evening at sunset for the migrating whales passing just offshore. Word catches on and crowds swell. And the city orders him to stop. So he installs 12 pianos at various locations on the coast, and when again he’s told to stop, he brings the pianos to San Francisco. As Mauro says, “What we’re doing may not be strictly legal, but sometimes you have to do something a little crazy.” Twelve Pianos is a story of music, culture, and poetry, determined to survive against all odds.

A Bernal Heights resident and filmmaker for over 20 years, Dean’s narrative silent films have won numerous awards at BHOFF, San Francisco International, Mill Valley, California Independent, and Moondance film festivals. His documentaries The Eye of Rudra and Twelve Pianos feature two of his closest friends, so called outsider artists, in their element as disrupters of conventional thinking and performance. He is also a co-director of the Sunset Piano project, and a producer of Flower Piano, the interactive music festival featuring over a dozen grand pianos placed within the San Francisco Botanical Garden. This year marks the fourth annual Flower Piano, and takes place from July 5 – 16. For more information, visit Sunset Piano’s website: www.sunsetpiano.com/flowerpiano
