Highlights of the 2011
Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema™ season
Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema™ offers free screenings of Bernal Heights and local filmmakers’ works in neighborhood parks and open spaces to increase the exposure and recognition of local artists, to heighten appreciation by neighborhood and citywide residents and to bring community together for the enjoyment of our parks and neighborhood resources.
The free outdoor presentations began the summer of 2004. In the first season, an audience of approximately 1,000 neighbors over three weekends, sat on a playground blacktop, huddled on a Holly Park basketball court and gathered together in the middle of a park under the stars to see local filmmakers’ shorts and videos.
Over eight subsequent seasons, Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema has grown to become an annual showcase of local filmmakers living in and around Bernal Heights but also extending to filmmakers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The outdoor season has extended from three weekend screenings to multiple contiguous days of screenings, filmmaker receptions, forums, film crawls, one-day production competitions and the inclusion of film-related live performance and music. In 2009 an indoor season of four quarterly screenings was established as a co-presentation with the Bernal Branch Library.
